Evo-Developmental Interactions of Craniofacial and Brain Anatomy

NYITCOM Assistant Professor of Anatomy, Dr. Aki Watanabe, is the recipient of a competitive NSF Career grant that will allow him to study the evolution of the brain and skull. As part of his research effort, Dr. Watanabe will be working with the Visualization Center on microCT scanning bird heads in various embryologic stages. Skeleton of a Cretaceous mammal from Madagascar reflects long-term insularity

Introducing a well-preserved fossil mammal from the Mesozoic: Adalatherium hui.

In this study, the holotype from Madagascar is named and the anatomy is described with the assistance of microCT data.

Fun fact: some of the microCT data collected for this study was scanned at the Visualization Center!

Dr. Simone Hoffmann co-authored the study. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Anatomy at NYITCOM and the head PI of the NSF grant that enabled the purchase of the the microCT machine for the Visualization Center.
