Al Anthony Mercado, Esq

Al Anthony Mercado has practiced in the fields of medical, podiatric and dental professional liability, general liability, and insurance coverage for over 30 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1989 before receiving his Juris Doctorate from Hofstra University School of Law in 1992. Mr. Mercado is admitted to practice law in New York State and the Eastern District of the State of New York.

Over his 30 plus year career Mr. Mercado has successfully litigated cases at the trial level throughout New York State with a special focus on the defense of complex malpractice cases. He has also prepared and successfully argued appeals before the appellate tribunals in New York State, including motions to the New York State Court of Appeals.

Mr. Mercado has vigorously represented healthcare professionals before the New York State Office of Professional Medical Conduct (OPMC) and the New York State Office of Professional Discipline (OPD). He also has extensive experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), having managed and participated in the arbitration/mediation of nearly 200 cases.

As a national speaker, Mr. Mercado has presented at National Healthcare Conferences on a wide range of trending medical-legal topics involving litigation and healthcare law. Similarly, Mr. Mercado has authored and published articles on various legal and risk management topics.

As a counselor at law, Mr. Mercado has provided practical risk management advice to physicians, dentists, hospitals, and healthcare organizations throughout New York State on legal and regulatory topics for three decades.

Outside of litigation Mr. Mercado has drafted, reviewed, and negotiated contracts for healthcare professionals, insurance carriers and corporations. He was also at the forefront of working with the NYS Department of Financial Services and insurance carriers to create purchasing groups for the benefit of qualifying healthcare professionals. For qualifying healthcare professionals this resulted in a discount on their malpractice insurance premium.

Mr. Mercado is a member of the New York State Bar Association, Erie County Bar Association, Suffolk County Car Association and The Association for Healthcare Risk Management of New York (AHRMNY).
